AFFORDABLE HOUSING IS BIG BUSINESS IN ROSMAN 

ROSMAN - Real estate troubles are making headlines across the country, but the news is good for a local Rosman company that is growing at a record pace.  The newly named - Transylvania County Rentals. LLC, has found a niche in a troubled time that is proving to be a formula for successful business and community building.

 "There is a critical shortage of housing in Transylvania County," says Charles Kantor of Transylvania County Rentals, "We made a significant investment in the Rosman area to create housing, employment, population and revenue for the town."    To give you a sense of the impact, this company is the largest revenue source for the Town of Rosman municipal water system.

GROWTH

It all started about five years ago when they bought a rehabbed a few houses for resale.  Then an opportunity to purchase the largest mobile home park in the county from then Mayor of Rosman,  Johnny Rogers, dramatically changed the scale and scope of the business venture.  Suddenly they were managing 60 units.

What has transpired in the few years that have followed could only be characterized as ‘out of character' for the normally relaxed pace of western North Carolina.  Transylvania County Rentals now owns and operates over 136 units.  They have single family homes, apartments, mobile homes, and even mini-storage units.

FAMILY

At the heart of this growing company is a family business.  Husband and wife team, Charles and Lonnie Kantor, and their two grown sons, Brian and Greg pull together to get the job done.  By any standard measure of success they are an amazing team.  Charles Kantor, the patron of the family, is a retired bank president and a member of the Florida Bar.  He says, "It is a great challenge and opportunity to share similar goals and objectives and to create a second generation in the same business."

While father Charles' business savvy is a guiding force, his sons have tapped into a new generation of marketing using the internet.  According to Greg Kantor, they get calls and e-mails from people all over the county and country.  "We've been able to bring people from all across the United States to a small town in North Carolina. It's really nice to see."

If that leaves you wondering what roll, Lonnie plays - suffice it to say she keeps all the boys in line and oversees the business operation.  She says it is more than a full-time job, "you will always find one of us here."

DESIGN

The family members all agree that they are paving their success by only creating homes they themselves would live in.  They have on-site maintenance crews and management, and pride themselves in safe and comfortable housing.   "People are looking for safe environments for their families," says Brian Kantor.

To ensure they have family oriented parks, they have a zero-tolerance policy and every tenant is screened with a criminal background check.  Units are affordably priced, and range from $500-$700 per month.

BUSINESS

In the area since 1987, the family company now calls itself the largest owners providing affordable housing in the county, and they are committed to strengthening the community in the way they do business.  Kantor says, "We are committed to hiring locals."  They have a staff of 10 and only buy locally when possible.

Transylvania County Rentals is a member of the Brevard-Transylvania County Chamber of Commerce.

FUTURE

Transylvania County Rentals is currently expanding and buying dozens of new units and plans to have them online in the next six months.  "We also just completed a 17 unit park in Connestee.  This beautiful new park is the result of completely re-doing the old Dogwood and Lydia Parks," says the senior Kantor.
